After the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, it's now the turn of their luxury cousin, the Lexus RZ, to introduce a major update. The Japanese automaker’s SUV benefits from a host of improvements for 2026, particularly in terms of battery capacity and electric powertrain.

It’s important to note that this is a European unveiling, meaning the North American version may differ slightly.

A Half Steering Wheel?!

The first thing that caught our eye at the Lexus RZ 2026 unveiling was its steering wheel, which has a rectangular shape with a slight curve. This design aims to improve dashboard visibility and provide more legroom. It’s hard to say whether this steering wheel will be approved in Canada, but it’s certainly an eye-catching feature.

Lexus has also introduced several high-end design elements, both inside and out. The exterior design has been refined on certain versions, and the Lexus RZ 550e F SPORT promises to be particularly striking in terms of looks.

An Upgraded Powertrain

For 2026, the SUV’s battery pack increases from 71.4 kWh to 77 kWh. Thanks to various other improvements, particularly in the cooling system, the brand claims an additional 100 km of range. Of course, these figures are based on European standards, but a significant range increase can also be expected in Canada.

The Lexus RZ is available in three different configurations in Europe, with power outputs ranging from 221 to 402 horsepower. Currently, in Canada, there is only one option—the 450e version, which delivers 308 horsepower. It’s highly likely that the 402-horsepower top-tier version and the mid-range 375-horsepower variant will make up the Canadian lineup.

While towing with the Lexus RZ is not recommended in Canada, the 2026 European model will have a towing capacity of 1,500 kg—750 kg more than the current model.

Where the automaker really scores points is with the new interactive 8-speed transmission, allowing drivers to manually control gear changes. This is something sorely missing in the electric vehicle segment. Like many, I’m not a big fan of single-speed transmissions.

Needless to say, we’re eagerly anticipating the Canadian version of the 2026 Lexus RZ.
